Competitive canoeing is known as "Outrigger canoe". This highly competitive sport is extremely popular in Hawaii and Polynesia. Outrigger canoe paddling is spreading rapidly to parts of United States, Australia, new Zealand, and Japan.
The First Outrigger racing canoe commissioned for construction in Hawaii between 1907 and 1910, then were abdundant by the 1930s. Most outrigger canoe team utilize six person canoes. Athletes occupy the first five seats, while the rear is taken by the steersperson or captain of the canoe. Special outrigger races are conducted for one person or two person (tandem) canoes.
